Do you use any of the online book-cataloguing sites, like Library Thing or Shelfari ? Why or why not? (Or . . . do you have absolutely no idea what Iām talking to?? (grin)) If not an online catalog, do you use any other method to catalog your book collection? Excel spreadsheets, index cards, a notebook, anything?
I broke down and bought a lifetime membership to Library Thing this year. The BF and I had once tried to start a spreadsheet of our book collection, but it’s boxed and otherwise stored in so many places, it was a pain trying to manage that. Not that this is hugely easier on the input end, but it is a heck of a lot prettier.
LibraryThing has all of the spreadsheet sorting capabilities that I need, and I love my random books from my library blog widget. I also like that this list is stored off premises, so if, god forbid, our house ever did burn down, that’s one less list I need to find room for in a firebox for insurance purposes. (Geesh, that’s depressingly practical of me š
I also like that, in the event I win the lottery, quit my job and suddenly have copious amounts of free time, there are all sorts of fun community things to do.
Sometime this winter, I have to dredge our boxes out of storage and catalog our remaining books. I’ve managed to hit almost everything not in boxed storage (minus the BF’s graphic novels, which are a project unto themselves). I’m actually really looking forward to rediscovering what we have in there. (And finally getting my mitts on American Gods, which I’ve been wanted to read forever, but BF has been too lazy to find for me!)
