Belgarath the Sorcerer – David and Leigh Eddings

The cracktasic tour of David Eddings’ Belgariad and Mallorean continues.

Belgarath the Sorcerer is the entire back story of the world of the series, as seen through the eyes of the 7,000-year old first disciple of the god Aldur. Belgarath is one of the better-developed and enjoyable characters from these books (how can you not love that the most revered man in all the world spends most of his time pretending to be a rootless vagabond with a great love for drinking and wenching?), and since the book is told in the first person, his slightly sarcastic spin on the various historical events alluded to throughout the series is great fun. It’s a great book for any completist out there, and a good example of how to write a prequel that’ll catch your audience.
