Dead Until Dark – Charlaine Harris

Having read the second book in the series already, and seen part of the tv series based on it, I wanted to get my hands on the first Sookie Stackhouse novel as soon as possible. I definitely liked it. It was weird, having seen the show first, and not finding a couple of plot threads I’d expected from that, but the actual book plot threads are plenty interesting.

The story is that of waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who has a little ‘disability’ – she’s telepathic. This means she goes through day doing her best not to read other people’s minds, and she definitely doesn’t date much. And then one day, Bill the vampire comes into the bar where she works, and she finds out that she can’t read his mind. Of course, she’s instantly intrigued.

This is a surprisingly sweet love story, considering it’s between a human and a vampire, and therefore has a certain requisite level of blood and guts. It’s also a great murder mystery, and I really enjoy the characterizations of the various people in the town of Bon Temps. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more in this series.
