Eclipse – Stephenie Meyer

Read for the Vampire Reading Challenge

So I managed to stay up about forty-five minutes late on a work night so I could finish Eclipse. I suppose I’m smitten.

I’ve been trying to put my finger on why exactly I enjoy this series as much as I have been, and it’s been tough. As a character, Bella often irritates me, so it’s not really her story that I find so compelling. After reading this latest book, I’ve decided it’s the ancillary relationships I enjoy, especially the evolution of the relationship between the Cullens and the werewolf pack. Reading the climax of this book with that in mind was a real treat.

And, as much as I hate to say this, I do give Meyer props for making this into an appropriately chaste relationship. Mostly because I’d branched out into regular fiction by the time I was the right age to read this book, and I managed to read some things I really shouldn’t have. So it’s nice to know there are people willing to not write books where the lead couple fall into bed at the first opportunity. Even if it is old-fashionedly quaint in this day and age.

So, one book to go, and it’s the book that I know angered a lot of fans, so I’m really rather curious to read it, but I also have this slightly guilty complex, as if it’s only a fluffy romance novel, so I’m going to make myself read a couple of other books before plunging into Breaking Dawn.
