Letters from Pemberley – Jane Dawkins

Letters from Pemberley tells of Elizabeth Darcy, nee Bennett’s, first year as a married woman, and mistress of Pemberley, through the lens of letters to her sister Jane. It’s not the worst Pride and Prejudice continuation I’ve ever read, but I won’t say it’s my favorite, either.

The author uses characters from Austen’s other works to populate the neighborhood, a convention I find rather annoying. Yes, I know that this sequels are all borrowing from a world already created by Austen, but if you’re going to go out on a limb and imagine what happened after the story ended, can’t you at least imagine some original characters at the same time?

And why exactly would people think that Georgiana and Colonel Fitzwilliam belong together? This is the second continuation I’ve run into where that happens (interestingly, both featured pretty much the whole kit and caboodle of Austen’s characters), and I just don’t like it.

I will say, it’s a quick read at least, so if you’d like some light diversion, it’s good for that.
