Charmed Destinies – Mercedes Lackey, Rachel Lee and Catherine Asaro

Read for the Once Upon a Time Challenge.

This book combines three novellas of some sort of romantic fantasy.

Rachel Lee’s ‘Drusilla’s Dream’ is a fun little little story that manages to combine a night shift data entry job with a good, old-fashioned quest by a princess to find the Behemoth that can save her father’s kingdom.

Catherine Asaro’s ‘Moonglow’ is set in a world where colors and shapes form magic, and the king must marry the most powerful sorceress in the kingdom.   In this case, it’s Iris, who can barely control her power, and who must find a way to save her new husband from the curse that makes him deaf, mute, and blind.

My favorite was Mercedes Lackey’s ‘Counting Crows’, which takes the medieval idea of a glove marriage, where a girl is married by proxy and then shipped off to meet her new husband in an interesting direction.   Gwynnhwyfar is a properly bred lady, and when she finds herself married to Duke Bretagne, she does her best to fit into her new life at Clawcrag Keep.     This seems like a pretty straightforward historical romance, but with a slight twist, because Gwynn is a sorceress, and when her new life is threatened, she has the means to defend herself.

This is definitely light, but enjoyable reading.    It’s worth getting for the Mercedes Lackey story alone – it’s definitely one of my favorites of hers.
