Demelza – Winston Graham

This book is the sequel to Ross Poldark, and takes place after he and Demelza, his former kitchen maid, have wed, and had their first child, Julia.     Demelza’s growing into the role of the lady of the house, and learning to love this strange life she’s found herself in the middle of.

Meanwhile, life is Cornwall is growing harder for the laborers, as mines are starting to close.    Ross is trying to keep his tenants in work, and shore up the copper business locally.     It’s a task that might take them close to ruin.

I’m really enjoying these books.    The slice of life there is written so well, and I like that you see people from all walks of life, from the gentry to the mine workers.   None of the characters are perfect, and seeing how they have to navigate their lives makes for great reading.
