This was great light reading – it’s a murder mystery, where DI Jack Spratt, and his brand new Sergeant Mary Mary, are trying to solve the killing of Humpty Dumpty. Who is a womanizer, possible philanthropist, and possible criminal on the run.
There are more fairy tale references than you can shake a stick at, and Fforde even works in mythology (Prometheus becomes the Spratt’s boarder in the course of the investigation). But what’s really great is it’s a legit mystery, because Humpty Dumpty was definitely up to something, and there are many people involved. The fact that he’s a sentient egg is really a side note.
This is a series, so I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
