Claudio Bianchi lives alone on his family’s farm in Calabria. At the beginning of the story, he can at best be described as curmudgeonly, until the day that a unicorn appears on the farm. He quickly realizes that she has chosen his farm to have her baby, and while waiting for this event, things begin to happen that make sure that his life is never the same.
This is really a story about loss, and love, and learning to live with both, through the medium of the unicorn. It’s a lovely little story, over pretty quickly. You might think Beagle covered unicorns already, comprehensively, but this tale is not The Last Unicorn – it’s its own lovely work.
