Continuing with this year’s comfort reading theme, I’m back at the beginning of the Elemental Masters series. This book is based on Snow White, and follows Maya Witherspoon. Her father was an English doctor in India, and her mother was a sorceress who gave up everything to marry her father. When both her parents die under rather mysterious circumstances, Maya flees to London.
She’s trained as a doctor, and does her best to keep practicing medicine in London, where she concentrates on caring for the poor, as well as the fallen, or slightly fallen women in her neighborhood. She’s starting to make a life for herself when the great evil from India finds her.
I fully enjoyed this as much this time as when I first read it, which would have been around the time it was published in 2001. Maya’s a great character, and this is a really nice take on Snow White, since she’s fully capable of taking care of herself, instead of needing a prince to rescue her, though there is a prince for her.
