Prudence – Gail Carriger

Lady Pruduce Maccon Akeldama has grown up in the shadow of her three parents – her birth parents, Lord and Lady Maccon – a werewolf and prenatural, and Lord Akeldama, a vampire.

When Lord Akeldama asks her to captain a brand new dirigible on a spy mission to India (he wants in on some exclusive tea), she jumps at the chance to go off on her own. With her best friend, Primrose Tunstall, Prim’s twin Percy as navigator, and Quesnal Lefoux as chief engineer, they’re off to India.

Once in India, Rue manages to get caught up in a turf war between the local shapeshifters and vampires, who have never run into someone like her before (a metanatural). There’s the potential for romance, and more adventure.

This felt very much like a set up story, and it was a little odd, because I’m not sure exactly where it falls tone-wise. It’s a continuation of the stories about Rue’s mother, which had decidedly adult moments, but seems to be skewing a little more toward the young adult tone of the Finishing School series, which took place earlier in this world. Not that it really matters, I suppose, but it does make me wonder exactly what the author has planned for this particular series.
