Kaylin is a Hawk, trying to keep the streets of the city of Elantra safe. After fleeing a terrible childhood in the fief of Nightshade, she’s drawn back there, when children are murdered. The twist is that they have been marked the same way that she was, when many other children died, and no one knows why she wasn’t killed as well. She’s sent back with a partner she can’t trust, and a Dragon whose agenda is unknown.

I picked up this book based on a few recommendations from a group I normally trust, and it was for the whole series. I got a deal and got book two at the same time. I say this, because if I had picked this up on my own, I don’t think I’d be tracking down any more books in this series. This book is uneven. It’s some very complex setup that includes a situation that probably should be a series ender, and I just don’t know. But, I have the second book, and I normally trust these people, so I’ll at least give the next book a go.
