A good chunk of the rest of the world is suddenly underwater, but Dinetah (formerly the Navajo reservation) had the forsight to wall itself off, and they’ve managed to survive. The flood has also brought back magic.
So we’ve got a fairly standard fare of kickass female protagonist with a past, and smart ass guy she may or may not be falling for. What’s different about this is that it’s steeped in Native American lore. The world building is wonderful, and though there are some familiar characters (if you’ve never read anything involve Coyote before, you’re not reading), they are definitely deeper than what I’ve run into before. Great story, and I’m very interested to see where it goes next.
On a side note, I understand now why the Navajo language was used to great effect as a code in WWII. There’s a great sprinkling of Navajo words through the story, and they’re just so different. Just really cool to see for language nerd me.
