Princess Essie of Escarland and elf Prince Farrendel ended up married to prevent a war between their kingdoms. Essie was able to help thwart an assassination attempt on the elven royal family that the neighboring Troll kingdom had tried to pin back on Escarland. So she and Farrendel are off to Escarland to figure out what’s going on.
Kind of like the last book in this series, I feel like I’m about to damn this book with faint praise, but it was just refreshingly kind, and weirdly normal. Essie’s family accepting Farrendel was just nice to see. This is exactly the kind of thing I’m really enjoying right now – there are stakes, but it’s not the terrible, apocalyptic end of the world on the side.
