Garden Notes

So we had around 18 inches of snow the week before Christmas that managed to evaporate overnight on Christmas Eve. Since I had some time off around the holidays, once things dried out a bit, I spent some time in the backyard. I wanted to get some measurements of where things stand. I’m planning on doing some light mapping come Spring, and I also at least want to plan out my first veg bed.

This is one of the back corners – I’m very curious to see how this will come out in the spring. I’m not loving that arborvitae-looking tree, so I’m definitely interested to see that gone, if it won’t be too much in the way of anything else. There appears to be a rhody in there, but the top might be dead. So we’ll have to see there.

This is the far side of the house – the two windows are bedroom windows, so it’s not like we’re going to be spending a lot of time looking out there. However, it’s southwest facing, so it seems a shame to waste the sun exposure. So I’ll definitely be giving this side of the house some thought. That small evergreen bush should probably go – it’s not doing anything for the space.

I seem to have inherited a magnolia – near the shed. Can’t wait to see what that looks like in the spring. Fortunately, it’s in an area I won’t immediately be targeting for the garden, so I don’t have to worry about it being in the way of anything.
