Garden Notes

For a variety of reasons, last weekend was crazy busy, so I never posted anything. I actually started a whole bunch of seeds on that Saturday. Above is what that looks like as of today – all but one type have had at least one sprout. (The Thai basil is lagging behind.) I actually ran out of room for plugs, so I started some collards on Saturday – those have not sprouted yet either.

The pot has a few dahlia tubers I harvest last year, and in front of it are two small pots – one of rosemary, and one of borage. If those don’t sprout, I’ll buy some, but I had seed, so figured I might as well try.

This weekend has been gorgeous, and I got a fair amount done outside. The above is set to be the main veg bed – it’s the same size as the community garden plot I’ve had for the last few years. It’s layered with newsprint, compost and seaweed.

I also got chicken wire laid out to flatten it from the roll, so I can turn it into a corral for the leaf pile(s). One of the rain barrels has also been attached to the downspout closest to the deck. I have one more of those to do, and may buy a third. (I have until 5/9 to order one from the water district.) There was also a fair amount of raking on that side of the house, and a little clean up of the shrubs on the side up front. It was a good, productive Saturday.
