It was nice after work on Thursday, so I went out at the end of my workday to tackle the shrubbery beside of driveway. (I started out working on my leaf corral, but the pile was too wet to completely move, so that’s only about half way done.) This little section is overrun with multiflora rose. There’s other stuff in there too, but I’m not sure what yet.
To the left (out of frame) is a Norway maple that fortunately for me is in the city’s setback, because it has a huge split in the trunk, and needs to go. I’ve had the city arborist come by, and they’re going to take care of it. So the very left-hand section might get a little torn up when that happens, and I’m not sure if I should care. To the right are some arborvitae, which while not my favorite plant in the whole world, are mature, are nicely shaped, and can therefore stay there.

This is absolutely not all of the rose, but I cleared out a fair bit. (And have the scratches to prove it.) So we’ll see if I can figure out what else is lurking in there (other than the range of Norway maple seedlings and small trees), and if anything is worth saving. If not, I’ll probably end up planting a native shrub or two there. My current thoughts are a viburnum or two, or maybe a small serviceberry.
