Kingdom of Ash and Briars – Hannah West

This story is a combination of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan (per the blurbs at least – I see where they wanted to go with that, but I don’t agree).

It’s an interesting concept. Bristal is an elicromancer – a now rare type of immortal that should be helping the mortals. The other two elicromancers have very competing agendas, and one very quickly becomes the big baddie for the book.

I enjoyed this story, but it’s not treading any new ground, so I can definitely see where not everyone would enjoy it. Still, if you want a nice fairy tale that’ll wrap everything up neatly at the end, this is a great book for that. (There are two more in the series, but appear to involve descendants of the people in this book, so I don’t know that I’ll be in a hurry to track those down.)
