While we were gone, I relocated all the house plants to the back room, so we could close the window shades that they were normally in front of.
The seedlings and the bedding plants were still under the grow lights, and I didn’t want those window shades open at night with all that light to show that we weren’t home.
I am happy to report, everything survived. And it’s probably a good thing I didn’t put out any more beddings plants before we left. There was another near frost while we were gone. The few plants I did put out did survive it, so it looks like my town didn’t frost, but it was definitely a near thing.
So as soon as I could, I got things hardening off. The dahlias had to come in and out for some of the nights, but the seedlings got some shelter in my old bureau, which we’re planning on seeing how long it’ll last out on the back deck this season.
I did get the bedding plants in the front bed within a few days. I had the pots out, but they were root bound enough that things were drying out quickly, and it got really hot for a few days right at the end of May. So I did lose a nemisia, but everything else survived.
The garlic grew about a foot while we were gone. I’m pretty sure this was on the strength of the Friday rainstorm we got before we left.
I did get a little trendy, and since I had so many chive flowers, I harvested some to make chive flower vinegar. I’m using a slow steep method, so it should be ready in another week – we’ll see how it comes out.
