Nettle and Bone – T. Kingfisher

What a lovely story. Marra is the youngest of three princesses. Her oldest sister is her favorite, but Damia is married off to the prince of the neighboring kingdom, and tragically dies. Kania, the second sister, takes Damia’s place. Marra and Kania had never gotten along very well, but when Marra goes with their mother to Kania’s daughter’s christening, Kania gives her a stark warning – do not come to this kingdom if I die.

Marra’s been exiled away to a convent, and had never been very good with court life, so she hadn’t realized that the convent was to keep her safe, just in case. The Northern kingdom could easily overwhelm them, and Marra’s mother doesn’t know what else to do, even when it turns out that the prince is abusive.

Marra’s around thirty when she finally decide to do something about the situation, and she assembles a motley team who are all older than her. These are you not your typical heroes that save the Princess, and I loved it. Such a great book.
