This is an interesting take on Sherlock Holmes – in this case, he’s an angel, which explains why he’s not the best at personal interactions with regular people. The angels bring some magic in the world, which is a nice extra touch – it’s not overdone, just there, and just enough to make the story interesting.
Everyone is renamed, so our Watson in this story is Doyle, and his injury from the war has a very interesting twist. (Heck, Doyle in general is full of interesting twists.) I think that’s what I enjoyed about this book – the things you’d expect from any Sherlock story are here, but explored from an interesting angle that you’re not even really aware of until you get into the story.
Like The Goblin Emperor, this is a surprisingly gentle story (even with Jack the Ripper involved). I think it’s worth a try even if you’re not normally a Sherlock fan.
