The Magician’s Daughter – H. G. Parry

Biddy has grown up on a hidden island off the coast of Ireland, raised by the magician Rowan and his familiar, Hutchincroft, who spends most of his time as a rabbit. It’s a rather idyllic existence, but as she gets older, she starts to realize that it’s rather odd that Rowan doesn’t allow her to go to the mainland.

When Rowan’s trips to the mainland grow increasingly dangerous, he begrudgingly has to let her in on some very heavy secrets around why both he and she have come to this island, and as a result, she does get to leave. What she finds is world that is increasingly bereft of magic, and even though she’s no magician herself, she may hold the key to bringing magic back.

I really enjoyed this book – it’s got a nice twist on how magic works, and it’s a lovely coming of age story.
