Names for the Sea – Sarah Moss

This is a bit of a fish out of water tale, of the year the author spend teaching in Iceland, just after their banking crash in the late 00’s.

The author is from England, so it was a little funny to see some of the things she found alien about life there that I probably would not have (the American car lifestyle for one), but there was still plenty that was interestingly different – living on a sub arctic island will definitely shape a culture.  And it was very interesting seeing the effects of that particular economic crash on an Icelandic scale, with their particular cultural background.  I suspect it’s very different there again, 15-ish years on, but it was a good flavor for the country, which is still on my to visit list.
