Cast in Secret – Michelle Sagara

I really enjoy this world that the author has created – it has such an air of realness about it, and such an interesting set of races. And the magic system gets more interesting as the story progresses.

Kaylin is sent to investigate the disappearance of what appears to be a simple box from Elani Street, at a shop where she had been many times before, but as ever, is much more than it appears. So naturally, the box is much more than it appears.

At the same time, off the books, she’s asked to visit the Tha’alani quarter. Everyone, included the Tha’alani, knows that Kaylin is terrified of them – they read minds, and she has secrets she wishes to keep. So she knows this is serious. And it is – one of their children has disappeared. And Kaylin will never say no to helping a child.

These two things are naturally tied together, in an end of the world sort of way, and Kaylin has to solve the mystery (with the help of her friends of course). Just a really interesting, atmospheric story.
