The Raven Tower – Ann Leckie

I’ve had this book in my figurative to read pile for a while now – I’ve heard really good things about the author, but just hadn’t gotten around to reading it. I saw a post somewhere online in the last few weeks that mentioned it was based on Hamlet, and for some reason, that was enough to pique my interest to pick it up.

Knowing that it’s Hamlet, you very quickly pick up on who’s basically who, and how the story is going to go, except that there’s another character – a narrator. It’s actually not clear in the beginning that it is a narrator – the narrated parts are done in the second person in a way that I have read before, so it’s not immediately apparent that this is someone talking to the person engaged in the action, but suddenly, the narrator does become a character. And bringing them in widens the story in a very interesting way.

All that to say, I really enjoyed this story. Even though I knew exactly what was going to happen, the larger framer of the story pulled me along to the end to see where that was going.
