This is the fifth book in the All Souls series. Book number four was about Marcus and Phoebe, and was a fairly stand alone story, but this book is obviously the beginning of a whole new story arc.
Matthew and Diana’s twins are approaching seven, which is the age that witches are traditionally tested for their powers. Diana is understandably leery of this happening to her children due to her own childhood testing experience, but the summons comes, and just after it, she’s contacted by her father’s aunt.
We’ve never looked very deeply into the Proctor family until this point, and while I absolutely love them, they seem a bit ret-conned into the story. I am also really annoyed how Diana’s aunt Sarah (from her mother’s side) comes across because of this new story line. But I’ll live with it, because as I said, the Proctor family is great! They’re settled in Ipwich, MA, a place I have visited, so I can absolutely picture the family’s home. And the deeper storyline involving their study of magic could be very interesting. So I’ve very willing to see where this new branch in the story takes us – the next book was just announced.
