Competence – Gail Carriger

This is the third book in the Custard Protocol series, and we’re not in Rue’s point of view in this one. The hero of this tale is her best friend, Primrose Tunstall. Prim’s the practical one on the airship, so it’s fun to see things happening from her point of view.

The main part of this story is a rescue mission that Rue’s mother sends them on to South America – there are some vampires there that are the last of their kind, and need some help. So this is a good excuse to send the ship off to parts unknown, and give them some long stretches of time on the ship to interact.

What’s interesting, and I hadn’t been able to put my finger on until I noticed the first view on LibraryThing when I was updating my entry there, is that I don’t love Prim and Tash’s relationship in this book. Tash is a werelion, and also a woman, so Prim’s been resisting her advances, because this is a world that doesn’t condone same sex relationships, even though they are featured in the series. The review pointed out that Tash’s behavior to Prim is really very sexually harassing. It’s probably meant to show that she’s fundamentally a lion, and therefore operating on different rules, but there’s also a trans character in this story (she’s an existing character – we find out she’s trans in this book) that’s treated as a very normal relationship (as it should be), so the contrast is a little odd.
