One of the best things we did was treat ourselves to a tour to the Isle of Skye, so we could have someone else do the driving. The road through Glen Shiel was amazing. (And pouring rain, so no pictures.) Our first stop, before Skye, was Eilean Donan Castle. Which I will own my nerd-dom, and confess how pleased I was when the tour guide mentioned my personal favorite of the movies it’s appeared in (Highlander), first in the list. I then got to list to a hilarious conversation between a couple probably not too much younger than my parents, where the husband tried to explain the plot of Highlander to his wife. Comic gold.
I hadn’t run into this before, but this a modern castle. The original was blown up during the Jacobite rebellion. This version was built at the beginning of last century. They did try to stick as much to original drawings and documents as they could, but one of the most photographed castles in Scotland is kind of a fake.

We saw a lot, and were really glad we were not driving on some of those roads. (Quiraing, I’m looking at you.) I ended up with more yarn, and we bought a really nice mug in Uig. It was a long day, but worth it.
