The Spy Coast – Tess Gerritsen

This is a fun book – told jumping over about a twenty year period in the life of Maggie Bird, now a chicken farmer in a small town in Maine, but formerly a spy. She ended up in Purity when several of her other former spy friends settled there after their retirement, and this tale is about why she left the CIA.

I did love the Maine setting. The author lives here, so she got the feel of the locals right. This does look like the first book of a series, so I assume we’ll explore the backstory of the other Martini Club members (the cover name for the book club meeting the Purity chief of police always seems to find them in). That definitely has potential.

I did enjoy Maggie’s story. Weirdly, I can identify with her quite a bit. She made her life choices in the direction I could see myself doing if I was more adventurous and suited for espionage. I got very antsy when we were finally starting to get to the meat of the actions that led to her leaving the CIA – I was all over the map on whether or not certain people were actually good or bad, and it was a pretty wild ride for a few chapters.
