This book has three different novellas, two from Lackey’s early series, and a standalone third story. I loved the intros to each, because she wrote them for any younger person reading those earlier stories today, so set the scene of how technology has changed since those two older series.
I have not read any of the Diana Tregarde books, but I know a friend loves them, and after reading this story (which is basically a prequel), I’ll be seeking them out. I can definitely see where this series has potential, although I’m curious to see if this newer story is better fitted to modern audiences than the originals.
The middle story continues the story of Jennifer Talldeer from Sacred Ground, and was enjoyable. I liked how she widened the net of the native stories and we can see how different traditions play against each other.
The last story was very modern – concerning a digital shaman who has made a name for herself solving issues when the digital world starts to manifest into our own. It’s all about magic, and how that works with computers. In this case, it’s a video game character gaining life from the belief of the people playing the game, but I love the tidbits she throws in of other possibilities. This was a fun set of stories.
