Thursday Next is a literary detective (SO-27). In this alternate universe, the Crimean War is still going on (she’s a veteran), and some stories aren’t what we would expect them to be. (Jane Eyre goes to India with her cousin at the end of her book.)
When Charles Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit is stolen, Thursday gets mixed up with SO-5 (we never do figure out exactly what they do), and her new partners die. It turns out the thief is one of her old professors, and not only has he gone pretty crazy, but he’s about to start a literary rampage. Thursday’s demoted back to her hometown of Swindon, but it turns out to be the perfect place to stop her enemy.
This is pretty typical Fforde – just hold on, and you should be able to figure out what’s going on by the end.
