The Silver Bullets of Annie Oakley – Mercedes Lackey

We’ve got another Elemental Masters comes to America book, but in this case, America is coming to Europe. Annie Oakley and her husband are traveling with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, and they’ve come to Germany. It’s winter now, and they’ve settled down in Strasburg for winter quarters. While they’re there, Buffalo Bill decides to hire a German couple, who turn out to be Elemental Masters.

The local lodge has noticed the presence of two new magicians in town, and enlists Frida and her husband, an American, to find out why they’re there. Annie and Frank have no knowledge of their magical power, so Frida and Jack offer to teach them while they’re in winter quarters. It turns out Annie has had a more magical life than she was aware of, and these lessons are a gateway to giving her the power to help people when she and Frank head back to America.

I really enjoyed this book – it’s really a very gentle story of friendship, with a few werewolves and other magical creatures thrown in. It’s nice to have the American touches, but also nice to be back in Germany, since so much of this series has been centered in England.
