It worked! As of Thursday, all of the tubers I over wintered in the garage had visible sprouts!
I do have to acknowledge that this was a very mild winter. I came across a post online with people are far north as Minnesota noting that they have dahlia sprouts in their gardens from leftover tubers that weren’t lifted last fall. So, definitely some freakishly good weather for keeping them over. But this definitely means as long as I can keep things in the 40s, they should be fine in my garage.
So despite my best intentions to not get any tubers this year, what did I do to celebrate?
This was at Broadway Gardens on my wander through on Friday. Now, I am a grown ass woman who makes her own money, and can totally afford to buy this, but you better believe I still had justifications for breaking my no new tuber rule done out in my head before I got to the cash register.
- I have been interested in this variety since I grew its sibling, Creme de Cassis.
- I had one large pot in the greenhouse sitting empty that I just needed to top off with potting soil due to robbing it to top off some others.
- I bought this from a local company, and since the tuber was on the smaller side, it was a very good price.
So here’s the newest addition, along with the three bedding dahlias that we bought last week. I’ve potted them up into large pots, and they’re sheltered behind the larger pots while they harden off.
