There are three characters to this story – Kate, in the present day; her great aunt Violet, when she was young, during WWII; and their ancestor Altha, who was tried as a witch in the 16th century.
I liked this book – the thread of power that draws these characters together is compelling, but it’s also really trying to hit you over the head with how much women are being oppressed, and need that power. Don’t get me wrong, that is true, but each of the men in these womens’ lives is just so, so bad. I don’t know. I really liked the world, but I just felt like it needed a lighter touch with the villainy – maybe having all three timelines having such terrible men was a touch too much.
