This was a nice spin on faeries. Emily Wilde is a professor at Cambridge who’s compiling an encyclopedia of the fae, world wide. At the start of our story, she’s arriving at a small town in a tiny Nordic country, hoping to meet their fae. Emily’s a bit prickly, so initially makes a bad impression with some of the townsfolk. Luckily (?) for her, her fellow professor Wendell Bambleby comes to rescue her from herself, and charms the townsfolk. It’s a good thing, because the fae of the area are powerful, and the villagers are just about to fall victim to some local fae power struggles.
I liked this because it was different – Emily’s not necessarily the most likeable character, but once Wendell arrives, the two of them together are a lot of fun. I’m very interested to see where this goes next, in light of certain revelations of Wendell’s parentage that are explored in this story.
