I didn’t realize how long it’s been since I did a garden update. Things are trucking along in that August way – most things are finally blooming.
I’ve had to resort of the above “mulch” for my maypop seedling. Some little shit (probably a squirrel) kept digging at it. The final straw was when I found it tossed to the outside of the pot, almost fully wilted. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to save it, but this seems to have done the trick.

The dahlias have finally started blooming, and the first one was one of the new tubers I bought this year! This is Penhill Dark Monarch – my first dinnerplate dahlia, and it’s huge! And lovely!
I’ve got a few more buds working. It’s not been a great year so far, which I’ve seen echoed online. Here, I think it’s been a bit too hot for them. None of the returning ones have gotten as tall as they have in the past, and I’ve been treating the same as I have in past years. So I’m fairly sure it’s the weather.

At least the zinnias are happy. I’m also really liking the dianthus I grabbed this spring – it’s blooming quite nicely.

Notice how brown the grass is – BF’s held off on mowing, since it’s not actually growing at the moment.
The golden amaranth is looking great. I’m waiting to see if the birds discover it. And the signet marigolds grew like crazy! I harvested some seeds from those today.
