Garden Notes

Back bed

Figured I should do a last day of August garden post – here’s the back bed in all its still pretty droughty glory. A few highlights:

The maypop is actually starting to resemble a vine! We’ll see how big this gets this year. I’ll put it up another size pot if I think it warrants it, but whatever pot it ends up in will be spending the winter in the garage.

The artichoke has finally bloomed, and the bees are loving it. It never got very tall, not sure if that’s because it was in a pot, or because of the dry conditions. (I have made a point of watering this and the dahlias because they are in pots, but that still only does so much.)

Still waiting on the rest of the dahlias to bloom, but I have more buds on Creme de Cassis, and the Bloomquist York looks like it’s really close. We’ve been having some cooler temps in the last couple weeks, and even had some rain on Friday, so we’ll see if the weather conditions shift a little more to their liking.

And finally, I bought a new camera. I bit the bullet and got myself a mirrorless. I’d gotten myself into yet another situation where my phone was often better than my point and shoot. I know I don’t have time to master a DSLR, but I read up on mirrorless cameras, and realized if I stayed in the Canon ecosystem, I should be able to upgrade but not get in way over my head immediately. Gave it its first test run today. The overall back garden bed photo above, and the photos below are my first outing. I’m starting out with just the kit lens, and I’m pretty impressed with what I got on the first tries.
