I’m continually impressed by the world building in this series. The author is going after certain archetypes of fantasy races in the various peoples that live in the city of Elantra, but they’ve all got some interesting twists to them. And Kaylin as a character continues to have a very interesting back story for someone so young.
In this book, we learn a lot more about how the fiefs outside Elantra were formed, but at the same time, it opens up a whole new slew of questions about why they’re there, and how they’re going to figure into the larger story. We also get some more interesting tidbits about Kaylin eventually having to appear at the dragon emperor’s court, although we’re not there yet.
I’m very much enjoying this series – it’s a wonderful unique voice to it, and I love that I still have a bunch more books to read.
