Whiteface Mountain – Wilmington, NY

We spent a long weekend in the Adirondacks. Had a lovely time wandering around Lake Placid, and asked an local shop keeper what she recommended in the area. She highly recommending take the Memorial Highway up to the top of Whiteface Mountain. So, off we went the next morning. And we were very glad to be there for opening – the line at the tollbooth wasn’t too bad, and we got immediate parking at the top. By the time we left, they were holding cars to wait for parking, and the line was at least twenty cars deep.

You don’t drive to the very top – you park at a small cafĂ©/gift shop, and it’s another fifth of a mile trail to the top. Or, you can take the 27 elevator. We had an asthmatic and guy who doesn’t do well with not great footing with heights. Guess which we chose?

The views from the top were amazing – we had a perfectly clear day. It was bit nippy, but not enough for me to regret wearing shorts. I’d love to do this in the spring sometime. It is high enough to have the alpine wildflowers. I would consider the summit trail to see those.
