Seokga is the fallen god of trickery, and Hani is the Scarlet Fox, a gumiho (nine-tailed fox who can take human form) once feared by men. They’re now both existing in the 1990’s in a Korean city. Seokga’s a detective, hunting the Unrulies in an attempt to get himself home, and Hani’s on his radar. Naturally, she joins forces with him to misdirect him, until something much bigger than both of them rears its ugly head and forces them to work together.
This was cute – very familiar tropes, but it was nice to get them through a non-Western lens. This book does come to a pretty good end, so it could be read alone, but it does leave open the door to the present day second book in the series. I’ll be interested to see how the author spins that.
