This is the book I bought at Shakespeare and Co. in Paris. I was first drawn to the cover art.
The book is a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the feminist book imprint Virago, so it’s a turnaround and celebration of a number of words that have been applied negatively to women.
I have to admit up front, the Margaret Atwood story was not my favorite, which was a surprise. But there was plenty to like in the rest. The stories range from straight fiction to magic realism. Some were inspired by real or family experiences of the author, or from larger cultural stories or themes. There was even a fully graphic novelized story. I am definitely in the right age group to appreciate these stories, but I think there’s probably something for anyone in here.
