Fingersmith – Sarah Waters

This is a great book. Started out as a balcony read, which I kept reading late on my last night on vacation, and read in the airport and on the airplane, despite being under the effects of a nearly 12-hour sleep deficit. I couldn’t put it down.

Set in Victorian times, this is the story of the orphaned Sue Trinder, brought up among the thieves of London. When she’s seventeen, a frequent associate of her adoptive mother offers her the job of a lifetime. Gentlemen, as he’s known, has long been trying to marry a rich heiress, to make his fortune, and he believes he’s found the perfect mark in Maud Lilly. He needs Sue to become Maud’s lady’s maid, to help convince Maud that she should marry him.

This seems like the perfect basis for a story, and it is, but it’s also only the beginning. I won’t go into any more detail, because the twisting and turning of the story is the fun of this book, and the reason I had to keep reading it even when jet-lagged. It’s an amazing story, and I will definitely be reading more of this author’s work.
