Harlequin Valentine – Neil Gaiman

Read for the Dream King Challenge.

Harlequin Valentine is a modern-day retelling of the commedia dell’arte story of Harlequin and Columbine.

Harlequin freely gives his heart to his Columbine, and then follows her around the city streets to see what she’ll do with it. It’s a weirdly romantic, definitely quirky, and almost gruesome tale that’s over very quickly, and has an ending I definitely didn’t see coming.

The language is lovely. The art is fairly true to life, which I confess I find a bit off-putting in most graphic novels, but worked well in this one.

It’s a very quick read, and I’d recommend it to any Gaiman fan when you have a few minutes spare and are looking for some quick escapism.
