After a rather pathetic run of January reading (I can read three books in a week if I really get going), I felt the need to turn to some comfort reading, so out came my copy of Robin McKinley’s Sunshine.
This book is one of the few relatively recent books I’ve bought (and I bought it when it was first published in 2003 and Robin McKinley was actually in town to promote it) that I pretty much couldn’t put down until I was actually finished reading it. I just love the two main characters. Sunshine is such a seemingly normal face in what turns out to be an increasingly abnormal world, and Con is a great change from the stereotypical vampire. I also really love that the book seems to start out in our world, and it’s only as the story progresses that you realize how different it is. The whole system of magic is woven seamlessly into the story.
I dearly wish that the author would grace us with a sequel, but, having seen her speak, I completely understand why it’s very unlikely that she will. I can only hope the writing gods smile upon her and send another Sunshine story her way.
