Swordheart – T. Kingfisher

Halla is a respectable widow who’s just inherited a fortune, and has been locked in her bedroom by the rest of her family by marriage, who want her to marry her husband’s cousin to keep the money in the family. That’s when she discovers that the dingy sword that’s been hanging there for as long as she can remember is the home of a spirit, and he’s sworn to protect his current wielder. Which means Halla suddenly has options.

She and Sarkis (the spirit) escape the house, and go on a journey to secure her fortune, meeting some great characters along the way. I really like how they’re both very regular people (well, as much as someone trapped in a sword can be a regular person). This book has some crossover with some other books by the author, so I’m definitely interested to read more in this world. And there’s another book covering another sword coming out soon, and I’m definitely tracking that down.
