Penric and Desdemona are called to a small town where a demon has been possessed by two hedge sorceresses in a row – a rare occurrence, since these kind of wild pairings can often go wrong. And this one has gone wrong. The demon doesn’t know how to vent its chaos, and has caused the early death of both women.
So that leaves a promising demon needing a new host. And at the same time, Pen’s brother in law (the army general) has sent him a young captain who was blinded in combat, to see if Pan can cure his blindness. Pen can’t cure his blindness, but he sees an opportunity.
This is just such a sweet story. Soldier Cin and Demon Iva come to each other when they need each other the most, and this is just such an interesting view into the demon/sorcerer relationship. This is only the very beginning of their partnership, and I hope we get to visit with them again.
