Garden Notes

Garden activity is starting to ramp up. I got the dahlias out in the pots on my lunch break on Thursday. I did have to get rid of one (cactus Tamboro), which had molded. Only some had sprouted, and all of them had when I planted last year, so we’ll see if that bodes ill. […]

Seedling haul

First seedling haul of the season: the yellow dahlia we like for the front bed, bidens (also for the front bed), basil, oregano and alyssum. I also got some zucchini seeds. They’re outside for now, but I will be keeping an eye out to make sure it doesn’t get too cold at night.

Deal with the Devil – Kit Rocha

I’m mildly annoyed with myself, for no good reason. I thought this had been a free Kindle deal, and was happy that I’d found one I actually enjoyed. And it turns out I paid for it, so I’m guess I’m annoyed that I know my own tastes and paid for a book I’d enjoy. I’m

Front bed

The front bed is clear of its winter leaf bed, and holy god are there a lot of maple seedlings! I always expect to see some, but I swear, it’s a regular carpet right now. I don’t remember a bumper crop of helicopters last year, but there apparently was one.

Dahlia greenhouse

Garden Notes

Things are coming together. It’s warming up (like we left the heat off overnight a few nights this week.) I’ve got the hose out, and today, I set up the dahlia greenhouse. I need to check on the dahlias and see if they’re waking up yet. I don’t want them out until sometime in May,

Magic Binds – Ilona Andrews

I’ve got to get better at reading series more closely together. Since I’ve been reformatting all my old blog posts, I’ve seen how far behind I am in this series, which is really silly, because we own all the books. This book makes no sense if you haven’t read everything that’s come before – there

A Sorceress Comes to Call – T. Kingfisher

Loved this book – it’s a great mash up of fairy tale (The Goose Girl) and Regency novels. (Per the author – I’d give a gothic horror edge as well, so a bit of Northanger Abbey.) Cordelia’s mother Evangelina is a sorceress, and has used her power in the past to have men take care

Seed starting

I planted up two of the three peppers today, and the zinnias. I’m trying to get things planted up as soon as they get true leaves – one of the peppers hasn’t reached that yet, and the talinum and gem marigolds are still very small. I gave up on the sweet peas and nigella. The

Only Bad Options – Jennifer Estep

I picked this up based on a recommendation of this author on Ilona Andrew’s blog – I will trust any recommendation she has for authors she enjoyed. Vesper works for R&D at a company owned by one of the ruling families in this universe – at this point in time, the galaxy is ruled by

Competence – Gail Carriger

This is the third book in the Custard Protocol series, and we’re not in Rue’s point of view in this one. The hero of this tale is her best friend, Primrose Tunstall. Prim’s the practical one on the airship, so it’s fun to see things happening from her point of view. The main part of
