What the Dead Know – Nghi Vo

At Home, Reading / Megan

This is a great, creepy story. Maryse is a fake medium, contracted to go with her partner, Vasyl to a house in South Dakota in the late 1800s. Once she’s there, she finds out the the dead really do speak. Quick story, very atmospheric. Enjoyed it very much.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches – Sangu Mandanna

At Home, Reading / Megan

Mika is a witch, which is this story, means she was orphaned, like all witches. She was raised by Primrose, the head of the witches in England. They’re not really supposed to congregate together, so Mika was raised by a series of nannies, and now that she’s an adult, she sees the other witches once

Nettle and Bone – T. Kingfisher

At Home, Reading / Megan

What a lovely story. Marra is the youngest of three princesses. Her oldest sister is her favorite, but Damia is married off to the prince of the neighboring kingdom, and tragically dies. Kania, the second sister, takes Damia’s place. Marra and Kania had never gotten along very well, but when Marra goes with their mother

Persephone – Eva Pohler

At Home, Reading / Megan

Not a bad free book. This is the set up to a series set in more modern days, but leaning on Greek mythology for the characters. The author does take certain liberties with the parentage of her characters, but she talks about why at the end of this book, and I like where she’s going

This book finally goes into the details of the origins of Valdemar. We’ve known it was founded by a nobleman from the far away Empire, and he summons the Companions after a prayer to all the gods he’s ever heard of – now we get the full story. Kordas, Duke of Valdemar, has worked very

Across the Green Grass Fields – Seanan McGuire

At Home, Reading / Megan

This is a Wayward Children book, but stands apart from them – none of the action takes place at Eleanor West’s school. Regan loves horses. She’s got a great relationship with her parents, but a rather shocking secret challenges her relationships with the girls she thought were her friends. (The set up for that is

Where the Drowned Girls Go – Seanan McGuire

At Home, Reading / Megan

This latest installment of the Wayward Children novellas take a slightly darker (which is saying something) turn. Cora was taken in by the Drowned Gods of the Moors when she and her friends were last there, and is afraid that it’ll mean she can never go back to her own world of the Trenches. So

Ropa lives in Edinburgh, and makes a living a messenger for the dead – bringing messages back to their loved ones. While it’s clearly a fantasy, it starts out in what could be our world, but very quickly, clues start to come in that Ropa’s world is not at all like ours. The people of

The Found and the Lost – Ursula K. LeGuin

At Home, Reading / Megan

This is a collection of novellas, so I’ve read some before (Earthsea), but some were new to me. It’s LeGuin, so they’re all good. I think with anything of hers, it’s a matter of what I’m in the mood to have stick with me. This time it was “Paradises Lost”, which is set on a

The Six Deaths of the Saint – Alix E. Harrow

At Home, Reading / Megan

I picked up the Into Shadow short story collection from Amazon because it has stories from several authors I’ve read before, and definitely looked like the subject matter was in my wheelhouse. This is the third I’ve read – I liked the prior two, but this one really spoke to me. This is the story
