The Village Library Demon Hunting Society – C.M. Waggoner

This book is what Murder She Wrote should have been, a cozy mystery where an older lady solves murders in a small town that turns out to be a horror story.

Sherry ended up in the small town of Winesap after her divorce. She’s the town librarian, and has managed to find a lovely boyfriend, and some friends. She’s also gained the reputation of a solver of murder mysteries, which doesn’t phase her much until one of the murdered people is someone close to her, and she suddenly realizes how many people in Winesap have actually died. That’s when the demon surfaces.

The demon actually isn’t much centered in the story – she’s there, but there’s a reason she was drawn to Sherry, and it’s that Sherry’s demons are way worse than anything a real demon can throw at her. She has to face her past in order to move forward. This book isn’t as cozy as it could be (thinking about the current trends). And I liked that – this really is the ending of the story that Murder She Wrote deserved.
